Geranium-Pelargonium, beter bekend als hanggeranium of balkongeranium, is een onverwoestbare kuipplant die de hele zomer lang bloeit met kleurrijke bloemen in rood, roze, wit, zalm of paars. Deze Zuid-Afrikaanse plant vormt hangende of opgaande stengels vol succulente bladeren en produceert continue nieuwe bloemen van mei tot de eerste vorst. De plant heeft karakteristieke, vaak geurende bladeren en bloemen die bestaan uit vijf blaadjes, soms met donkere vlekken of strepen. Verschillende typen variëren van hangende vormen voor balkonbakken tot opgaande vormen voor borders en containers. Pelargonium is de klassieke keuze voor zomercontainers en balkontuinen waar langdurige, onderhoudsvriendelijke bloei gewenst is. Zet de plant op een zonnig plaatsje. ### Cultivars (Soorten) *De Pelargonium zonale*-hybriden met bijna ronde bladeren. Tot deze groep behoren de meeste rechtopgroeiende soorten. *De Pelargonium peltatum*-hybriden met gladde, wasachtige bladeren en (half)hangende stengels. De Franse pelargoniums, worden als kamerplant gehouden, stammen af van *P. cucullatum* en *P. grandiflorum.* ### Onderhoud Plant pelargonium in volle zon in goed doorlatende potgrond. Plant verdraagt droogte goed, maar bloeit rijker bij regelmatige watergift. Knip uitgebloeide bloemtrossen regelmatig weg voor nieuwe bloei. Bemest wekelijks met bloemenvoeding voor continue bloeiproductie. Overwinter vorstvrij binnenshuis. Snoei in maart terug en begin geleidelijk weer water te geven voor nieuwe groei. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Pelargonium werd in 18de eeuw vanuit Zuid-Afrika naar Europa gebracht en werd snel populair als balkonplant. Verschillende soorten hebben geurende bladeren die gebruikt worden in parfums. In traditionele geneeskunde werden pelargonium-soorten gebruikt voor ademhalingsproblemen.
