Deze loofvallende struiken worden 1,5-3 meter hoog en zijn het resultaat van eeuwenlange kweekarbeid, vooral rond Gent - vandaar de naam. De bloemen verschijnen vaak gelijktijdig met of net voor de bladuitloop en bedekken de struik volledig in een zee van kleur. Na de bloei ontwikkelen zich verse groene bladeren die in herfst prachtig verkleuren in tinten geel, oranje en rood. Gentse azalea's zijn onmisbaar voor voorjaarsborders en bosachtige tuinen waar spectaculaire bloei en herfstkleur gewenst zijn. De plant staat graag in een omgeving met kamertemperatuur van 15 tot 20°C. Zorg voor een hoge luchtvochtigheid door de plant n de buurt van een badkamer of keuken te plaatsen. Gebruik goed doorlatende, licht zure grond en houd de grond gelijkmatig vochtig maar niet drassig. ### Cultivars (Soorten) Gentse azalea's (Rhododendron simsii) zijn verkrijgbaar in verschillende soorten en variëteiten. Populaire keuzes zijn onder andere de 'Andios' met grote roze bloemen, 'Coral Bells' met koraalroze bloemen, 'Red Wing' met rode bloemen en witte rand, 'Snowball' met bolvormige witte bloemen en 'Pink Pearl' met zachtroze bloemen. Er zijn nog veel meer variëteiten, je kunt er dus kiezen die passen bij jouw voorkeuren en de gewenste uitstraling voor de ruimte. ### Onderhoud Plant Gentse azalea in halfschaduw in zure, humusrijke grond die niet uitdroogt. Ochtendzon is welkom, maar bescherm tegen hete middagzon. Water met regenwater of zacht water - azalea's zijn gevoelig voor kalk. Mulch met naaldhoutcompost om zuurgraad te behouden en verdamping tegen te gaan. Snoei spaarzaam direct na bloei. Bemest in voorjaar met speciale azaleavoeding. Bescherm in winter tegen koude oostenwinden. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Gent was eeuwenlang het centrum van azaleakweek in Europa. Gentse kwekers ontwikkelden winterharde rassen die Noord-Europese winters kunnen overleven. Veel cultivars zijn vernoemd naar Belgische personen en plaatsen.
