# Gentiaan

## Gentiana sp.

Gentiaan (Gentiana) is een bijzondere bergplant met intense, diepblauwe bloemen die behoren tot de mooiste kleuren in het plantenrijk. Deze compacte vaste plant bloeit laat in het seizoen (augustus-oktober) met trompet- of stervormige bloemen in het meest zuivere blauw, hoewel sommige soorten ook paarse, roze of witte varianten hebben.

De plant vormt lage rozetten van lancetvormige bladeren en blijft compact (10-30 cm hoog), wat perfect is voor rotstuinen en alpiene borders. Gentiaan staat bekend om zijn moeilijke kweek maar beloont de gedulge tuinier met ongeëvenaarde kleurpracht. Gentiaan is essentieel voor liefhebbers van bijzondere alpiene planten en rotstuinen waar authentieke bergflora gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De gentiaan heeft een kalkrijke, licht vochtige grond nodig en hij heeft enkele uren contact nodig met de directe zon.

### Onderhoud

Plant gentiaan in halfschaduw in zeer goed doorlatende, humusrijke grond met constante vochtigheid. Veel soorten hebben kalkrijke grond nodig.

Zorg voor koele wortelzone door mulchen met grind of steentjes. Plant verdraagt geen uitdroging maar ook geen wateroverlast.

Vermeerdering uit zaad is mogelijk maar vereist koude stratificatie. Verdeling is risicovol - gentiaan houdt niet van verstoring.

Gentiaan wordt traditioneel gebruikt voor de productie van gentiaanwortel-bitter, een digestief dat vooral in Alpenlanden populair is. Wortels bevatten zeer bittere stoffen.

In de Alpen zijn gentianen beschermde planten vanwege overbeplukking voor medicijngebruik. Tuinkweek draagt bij aan behoud van deze prachtige bergflora.
