Deze robuuste struik wordt 2-4 meter hoog en heeft grote, drielobbige bladeren die in herfst prachtig rood tot oranje verkleuren, gevolgd door clusters van rode bessen die vogels aantrekken. De opvallende bloemen bestaan uit steriele randbloemen die de kleinere vruchtbare bloemen in het midden omringen. Na de bloei ontwikkelen zich heldere rode bessen die belangrijk wintervoedsel zijn voor vogels, hoewel ze licht giftig zijn voor mensen. Gelderse roos is essentieel voor natuurlijke tuinen en wildlife-vriendelijke beplanting waar seizoenskleur en ecologische waarde belangrijk zijn. De bloeiwijze is steriel, deze variëteit zal dus geen bessen dragen; *Viburnum opulus ‘Compactum’* is geschikt als haag, hij wordt slechts 2 m hoog; *V. opulus‘Notcutt’s Variety’* is een variëteit met veel grote, helderrode bessen en hij kan 3 m hoog worden; *V. opulus ‘Xanthocarpum’* is een variëteit met een lichtgroen blad en oranjegele bessen; *V. opulus ‘Aurea*’ heeft een bont blad. ### Onderhoud Plant gelderse roos in volle zon tot halfschaduw in vochtige, voedselrijke grond. Struik is zeer aanpassingsvermogen en groeit in normale tot natte grond. Snoei alleen na bloei door oude takken weg te nemen en vorm te corrigeren. Te veel snoei vermindert de bloei omdat bloemen op tweejarig hout gevormd worden. Water jonge planten regelmatig, oudere exemplaren zijn droogteverdragend. Voor optimale bessenproductie: plant meerdere exemplaren voor kruisbestuiving. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Gelderse roos ondersteunt meer dan 20 insectensoorten en is essentieel voor biodiversiteit. De struik biedt nestgelegenheid en voedsel voor talloze vogelsoorten. In folklore symboliseert Gelderse roos zuiverheid en werd de plant gebruikt bij huwelijksfeesten.
