# Eucalyptus

## Eucalyptus sp.

Eucalyptus is een snelgroeiende boom uit Australië die opvalt door zijn aromatische, vaak blauwgrijze bladeren en karakteristieke schors die in stroken afbladdert. Deze warmteminnende boom kan in kuipteelt gehouden worden of in zeer beschutte locaties buiten geprobeerd worden, hoewel de meeste soorten niet volledig winterhard zijn.

De bladeren hebben een intense eucalyptusgeur door etherische oliën en kunnen verschillende vormen hebben - ronde jeugdbladeren die overgaan in langwerpige volwassen bladeren. Sommige soorten produceren opvallende bloemen maar dit gebeurt zelden in ons klimaat. Perfect voor kuiptuinen waar mediterrane of exotische uitstraling gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Geef eucalyptus een plek uit de wind in voedzame grond die niet uitdroogt. Bepaalde soorten eucalyptus zijn wel zoutbestendig maar de winterharde soorten voor ons klimaat niet. Geef de nodige ruimte: het worden grote bomen.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

*Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. niphophila* (de kleinste, tot 6 m) en *Eucalyptus parvifolia* (12 m) worden als winterhard beschouwd. *Eucalyptus dalrympleana* (20 m) en *Eucalpytus gunnii* zijn excellente tuinsoorten maar hebben wat meer beschutting nodig.

### Onderhoud

Plaats eucalyptus in volle zon in goed doorlatende grond. Plant heeft veel licht en warmte nodig voor optimale groei en aromatische bladeren.

Water regelmatig maar voorkom wateroverlast. Bemest maandelijks in groeiseizoen. Knip regelmatig uit voor compacte vorm en aromatische nieuwe bladeren.

Overwinter de meeste soorten vorstvrij binnen bij 5-10 °C. Zeer winterharde soorten kunnen buiten met zware winterbescherming.

Eucalyptus bladeren bevatten etherische oliën met antiseptische eigenschappen en worden traditioneel gebruikt in aromatherapie en natuurlijke remedies.

In oorspronkelijke habitat zijn eucalyptus bomen essentieel voor koala's en andere Australische dieren. In Europa vooral gewaardeerd om decoratieve waarde en geur.
