# Es

## Fraxinus excelsior

Es (Fraxinus excelsior) is een inheemse loofboom die kan uitgroeien tot imposante exemplaren van 25-30 meter hoog. Deze snelgroeiende boom heeft karakteristieke, geveerde bladeren met 9-15 blaadjes en een lichtgrijze, gevuurde schors die met de jaren dieper wordt gegroeid.

De boom bloeit vroeg in voorjaar vóór de bladuitloop met onopvallende bloemen, gevolgd door gevleugelde vruchten (essenvleugels) die in trossen hangen. In herfst verkleuren de bladeren geel voordat ze vallen.

Perfect voor grote tuinen, parken en als windsingel waar een snelgroeiende inheemse boom gewenst is. ##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De es is wat betreft bodemtype niet specifiek, je kan hem aanplanten in een zware kleibodem en een lichte zandbodem. Belangrijk hierbij is dat de bodem voedselrijk is en goed draineert. De es verkiest een vochtige bodem. Hij verdraagt natte bodems, maar geen langdurige overstromingen of stilstaand water.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

*Fraxinus excelsior 'Atlas'* is een cultivar met een piramidale tot breed kegelvormige, opgaande kroon. De cultivar groeit langzamer dan de soort en het is de beste cultivar voor kleinere tuinen; *Fraxinus ornus 'Meczek'* is een langzaam groeiende, bolvormige es met een smalle stam. Hij doet het prima in bakken of potten. Dit is een fijnere en elegantere vorm van *Fraxinus excelsior 'Nana';* Een smalle, zuilvormige es is *Fraxinus ornus 'Obelisk'.* Deze es wordt tot 12 m hoog.

### Onderhoud

Plant es in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in vochtige, voedselrijke grond. Boom verdraagt tijdelijke wateroverlast maar geen langdurige droogte.

Jonge bomen kunnen gesnoeid worden voor vorm, oudere exemplaren hebben nauwelijks snoei nodig. Snoei in winter tijdens bladloze periode.

Water jonge bomen tijdens droge periodes. Oudere bomen zijn zelfvoorzienend. Geen bemesting nodig in normale tuingrond.

Es is ecologisch van groot belang - meer dan 40 insectensoorten leven van de boom. Essenvleugels zijn belangrijk voedsel voor vogels in winter.

Eschout is zeer sterk en buigzaam, traditioneel gebruikt voor werktuigstelen en sportartikelen. Helaas wordt es bedreigd door essentaksterfte, een schimmelziekte.
