# Eenstijlige meidoorn

## Crataegus monogyna

Eenstijlige meidoorn (Crataegus monogyna) is een inheemse boom of grote struik die essentieel is voor onze natuurlijke ecosystemen. Deze doornige plant heeft diep ingesneden bladeren, spectaculaire witte bloemen in mei en vormt in najaar massa's rode bessen die belangrijk voedsel zijn voor vogels.

De plant groeit langzaam uit tot 6-10 meter hoge boom met karakteristieke, onregelmatige kroon. De witte bloemen hebben een intense, zoete geur en bedekken in mei de gehele kroon. De kleine rode bessen blijven lang aan de boom hangen. Perfect voor inheemse hagen, windsingels en als solitaire boom in natuurlijke tuinen.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Meidoorn is een snelle groeier die weinig eisen stelt aan de bodem.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

De variëteit *Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet'* bloeit in prachtige rozerode tuilen; *Crataegus lavalleei 'Aurora'* verdraagt het stedelijk klimaat goed en is weinig gevoelig voor luchtverontreiniging.

### Onderhoud

Plant meidoorn in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in goed doorlatende grond. Plant is zeer aanpassingsvermogen en groeit in arme tot rijke grond.

Snoei voor haagvorming in winter. Vrijstaande bomen hebben nauwelijks snoei nodig. Let op scherpe doorns bij alle werkzaamheden.

Geen speciale verzorging nodig - meidoorn is extreem hardy en droogteverdragend eens gevestigd. Bemesting niet nodig.

Meidoorn is een van de meest waardevolle planten voor biodiversiteit - meer dan 150 insectensoorten zijn ervan afhankelijk. De plant vormt de ruggengraat van natuurlijke ecosystemen.

Traditioneel symbool van bescherming en liefde in Europese folklore. Meidoornhout is zeer hard en werd gebruikt voor werktuigen. Bessen hebben medicinale eigenschappen.
