Dwergmispel (Cotoneaster) is een veelzijdige struik die verkrijgbaar is in talloze vormen: van platte bodembedekkers tot opgaande hagen van 3 meter hoog. Deze robuuste plant heeft kleine, ovale bladeren, onopvallende witte of roze bloemetjes in mei-juni en vormt in najaar massa's rode, oranje of zwarte besjes. De herfstverkleuring varieert van geel tot vuurrood, afhankelijk van de soort. De kleine bessen blijven lang aan de plant hangen en zijn geliefd bij vogels. Sommige soorten zijn wintergroen, andere loof vallend. Perfect voor onderhoudsarme tuinen waar betrouwbare groei en seizoenskleur gewenst is. De cultivar *C. dammerii 'Major'* heeft een groter blad. Deze cultivars hebben alle een liggende groeiwijze terwijl *Cotoneaster x suecicus ‘Coral Beauty’* een grotere dwergmispel is die wel 1 m hoog kan worden en uitgroeit in struikvorm. Deze variant krijgt een overvloed aan feloranje bessen die tot ver in de winter aan de takken blijven. ### Onderhoud Plant dwergmispel in volle zon tot schaduw - plant is zeer aanpassingsvermogen. Groeit in alle grondsoorten, ook arme en droge gronden. Snoei indien nodig in winter voor vorm. Veel soorten hebben nauwelijks snoei nodig. Let op: snoeihout kan ziekte verspreide - desinfecteer gereedschap. Water alleen eerste jaar regelmatig. Eens gevestigd is plant zeer droogteverdragend en onderhoudsarm. Bemesting niet nodig. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Dwergmispel is een van de belangrijkste struiken voor vogels door de rijke bessenproductie in najaar en winter. Veel vogelsoorten zijn afhankelijk van deze voedingsbron. Sommige soorten worden gebruikt voor bonsai door hun kleine bladeren en interessante vertakking.
