# Dwergkwee

## Chaenomeles sp.

Dwergkwee (Chaenomeles) is een robuuste, doornige struik die vroeg in het voorjaar exploiteert in een zee van roze, rode of witte bloemen voordat de bladeren verschijnen.

Deze compacte struik (1-2 meter) produceert na de spectaculaire bloei kleine, harde vruchten die uitstekend zijn voor jam en gelei. De vijfbladige bloemen verschijnen maart-april en bedekken de takken volledig, waardoor dwergkwee een van de meest opvallende voorjaarbloeiers is. De kleine, appelachtige vruchten rijpen in september en hebben een intense geur en smaak. Perfect voor gemengde hagen, solitaire plaatsing of als espalier tegen muren.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De dwergkwee heeft een zandgrond nodig. Hij verkiest direct zonlicht, maar kan ook een langere tijd in de halfschaduw staan.

### Onderhoud

Plant dwergkwee in volle zon tot lichte schaduw in goed doorlatende grond. Plant is zeer aanpassingsvermogen en groeit in arme tot rijke grond.

Snoei alleen na bloei in mei door oude takken weg te nemen en vorm te corrigeren. Let op de scherpe doorns bij snoeiwerk.

Water eerste jaar regelmatig, daarna is plant zeer droogteverdragend. Bemesting niet nodig - te rijke grond geeft veel blad ten koste van bloei.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Dwergkwee is ecologisch waardevol door vroege bloei die essentiële nectar biedt aan bijen wanneer weinig anders bloeit. De dichte, doornige groei biedt vogels beschutting en nestgelegenheid.

Historisch werden kweevruchten veel gebruikt als geneesmiddel en voor parfum. Tegenwoordig vooral gewaardeerd om culinaire mogelijkheden en spectaculaire voorjaarsbloei.
