# Dwergkornoelje

## Cornus canadensis

Dwergkornoelje (Cornus canadensis) is een bijzondere bodembedekker uit Noord-Amerika die opvalt door zijn grote, witte schijnbloemen en decoratieve rode bessen.

Deze lage plant (10-20 cm) heeft karakteristieke bladeren in kransen van zes en vormt langzaam uitbreidende tapijten in schaduwrijke bostuinen. De opvallende witte "bloemen" zijn eigenlijk gekleurde schutbladeren rond kleine, onopvallende echte bloemen. Na de bloei ontwikkelen zich clusters van felrode bessen die geliefd zijn bij vogels. In herfst verkleuren de bladeren prachtig rood. Perfect voor natuurlijke schaduwtuinen onder bomen waar een bijzondere bodembedekker gewenst is.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Dwergkornoelje is een excellente bodembedekker voor een vochtige, schaduwrijke plek.  
Plantdichtheid: 8 - 12 per m²

### Onderhoud

Plant dwergkornoelje in (diepe) schaduw in zure, constant vochtige, humusrijke grond. De plant imiteert natuurlijke boscondities en verdraagt geen uitdroging.

Voeg jaarlijks bladcompost toe als mulchlaag. Water tijdens droge periodes - de plant mag nooit uitdrogen. Bemesting is niet nodig in goede bosgrond.

Laat de plant met rust - dwergkornoelje houdt niet van verstoring. Vermeerdering via deling is mogelijk maar moeilijk.

Dwergkornoelje is ecologisch waardevol in bosecosystemen en biedt voedsel aan vogels via zijn rode bessen. De plant speelt belangrijke rol als bodembedekker in natuurlijke bossen.

In Noord-Amerika worden de bessen traditioneel gegeten door inheemse volken. De plant heeft medicinale toepassingen, maar wordt hoofdzakelijk gewaardeerd om decoratieve waarde.
