# Duindoorn

## Hippophae rhamnoides

Duindoorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is een robuuste, inheemse struik die uitblinkt in extreme omstandigheden zoals kustgebieden en droge, arme gronden.

Deze doornige struik heeft smalle, zilverachtige bladeren en produceert op vrouwelijke planten helderoranjerode bessen die rijk zijn aan vitamine C en andere voedingsstoffen. De plant groeit 2-4 meter hoog en vormt via worteluitlopers dichte kolonies die uitstekend zijn voor windsingels en bodembescherming.

Duindoorn bloeit onopvallend in maart-april vóór de bladuitloop, maar de decoratieve vruchten blijven lang aan de plant hangen. Perfect voor kusttuinen, droge hellingen en als natuurlijke omheining.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Plant duindoorn op een zonnige plaats in een humeuze, kalkrijke bodem. De bodem mag vrij droog zijn.  
Plantdichtheid: 1 per m²

### Cultivars (Soorten)

*Leikora* is een erg mooie vrouwelijke plant; zet er een mannelijke bestuiver als *Pollmix* bij, wil je ook bessen.  

Duindoorn is een tweehuizige (dioecische) plant waarbij de mannelijke en vrouwelijke geslachtsorganen niet op dezelfde plant voorkomen. Er bestaan dus zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke planten van deze soort.

### Onderhoud

Plant duindoorn in volle zon in goed doorlatende, liefst zanderige grond. De plant verdraagt extreme droogte, wind, zout en arme gronden waar weinig andere struiken overleven.

Snoei alleen indien nodig in winter. Let op: de takken hebben scherpe doorns. Plant verspreidt zich via worteluitlopers - knip ongewenste scheuten regelmatig weg.

Geen bemesting of extra water nodig. Voor vruchten: plant 1 mannelijke bij meerdere vrouwelijke exemplaren. Oogst bessen in september-oktober voor jam en sap.

Duindoorn speelt cruciale rol in kuststabilisatie door zijn diepe wortelstelsel en vermogen om stikstof te binden via wortelknolletjes. Ecologisch zeer waardevol voor kustecosystemen.

De bessen bevatten 10x meer vitamine C dan citrusvruchten en worden steeds populairder als superfood. Perfect voor zelfvoorzienende tuinen in moeilijke omstandigheden.
