# Chinese lantaarn

## Abutilon sp.

Chinese lantaarn (Physalis alkekengi) is een opvallende vaste plant die bekend staat om zijn decoratieve, oranje kelken die op papieren lantaarntjes lijken. Deze 40-60 cm hoge plant produceert in de zomer kleine witte bloemen die zich ontwikkelen tot karakteristieke, opgeblazen kelken.

De oranje "lantaarntjes" bevatten kleine, eetbare bessen en zijn zeer decoratief in herfsarrangementen en droogboeketten. De plant breidt zich uit via ondergrondse uitlopers en kan zich in geschikte omstandigheden flink uitbreiden. Perfect voor natuurlijke tuinen en snijbloemen.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Abutilon is een exotische plant die alleen bloeit op een warme plek. Hou ze uit de felle wind: de takken zijn dun en broos. Abutilon verdraagt geen vorst en moet bij 5°C naar binnen en vorstvrij kunnen overwinteren. Vanaf midden mei mogen de planten terug naar buiten. Zorg dat ze in de winter niet uitdrogen.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Abutilon megapotamicum heeft opvallende rood met gele bloemen; Abutilon x suntense en Abutilon vitifolium zijn tegen een paar graden vorst bestand en kunnen op een beschutte, zonnige plek mits extra bescherming de winter ook in de tuin overleven.

### Onderhoud

Plant in volle zon tot halfschaduw op vruchtbare, goed gedraineerde grond. Chinese lantaarn is vrij aanpasbaar maar presteert het beste op humusrijke grond.

Water regelmatig tijdens droge periodes. Let op uitbreiding via uitlopers - plant kan zich flink uitbreiden. Begrens indien gewenst met wortelbarrière.

Laat stengels staan tot na de winter voor decoratieve waarde. Knip terug in voorjaar. Deel overwoekerde planten in voorjaar.

Chinese lantaarns zijn zeer populair in bloemschikkunst door hun unieke vorm en lange houdbaarheid. Ze drogen perfect en behouden hun kleur maandenlang.

De plant heeft ook medicinale toepassingen in de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde. In de tuin biedt hij late zomerstructuur en herfskleur.
