Een camelia kiezen doe je helemaal op smaak: er zijn meer dan 1000 verschillende soorten! Camelia's zijn één van de vroegste en opvallendste lentebloeiers met grote bloemen in soms felle kleuren die afsteken tegen een al even decoratief, glimmend donkergroen blad. Kan ook als terrasplant en zelfs als kamerplant gehouden worden. De vruchten zijn rond, rood-bruin en lijken op sierappeltjes. Plant de camelia in de halfschaduw, de bodem is best neutraal tot licht zuur. ### Onderhoud Camelia's hebben niet zozeer onder de vorst dan wel onder de droogte te lijden. Zorg dat ze nooit uitdrogen. Geef geen mest en zo weinig mogelijk water tussen mei en september, dat verstoort de knopvorming. Een camelia snoei je niet. ### Dit wist je nog niet: Camelia's kunnen heel oud worden: er zijn exemplaren bekend van 200 tot 300 jaar oud. Staat je camelia in bloei, schud er dan elke dag eens aan.
