# Amerikaanse sering

## Ceanothus sp.

Amerikaanse sering (Ceanothus) is een spectaculaire bloeiende struik met wolkjes van kleine, intensief blauwe bloemen die een zoete geur verspreiden. Deze California lilac bloeit overvloedig van mei tot juli en trekt massaal bijen, vlinders en andere bestuivers aan.

De kleine, donkergroene bladeren blijven grotendeels wintergroen. Met zijn compacte groeiwijze en rijke bloei is Amerikaanse sering perfect voor borders, rotstuinen en als solitaire blikvanger. Een echte showstopper die elke tuin een mediterrane uitstraling geeft.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De meeste soorten zijn wintergroen maar niet winterhard. Geef ze daarom een beschutte plek en de potplanten plaats je best binnen. De plant heeft het in onze natte winters soms moeilijk, zorg daarom voor een goed doorlatende bodem.

### Onderhoud

Plant Amerikaanse sering in volle zon op goed gedraineerde, liefst iets kalkhoudende grond. De plant is zeer droogtetolerant eenmaal gevestigd en heeft weinig water nodig. Vermijd te veel water - natte voeten kunnen wortelrot veroorzaken.

Snoei direct na de bloei in juli om de vorm te behouden en nieuwe bloei te stimuleren. Knip alleen de uitgebloeide takken terug. Amerikaanse sering is matig winterhard tot ongeveer -15 °C. In koudere gebieden plant je best tegen een beschutte, zuidelijk gelegen muur. Jonge planten hebben de eerste winters bescherming nodig met vlies of dennentakken.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

Amerikaanse sering is perfect geschikt voor xerofytentuinen en mediterrane tuinstijlen dankzij zijn uitstekende droogtetolerantie. De plant is oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Californië en gedijt het best in warme, beschutte microklimaten. Ideaal voor tuineigenaars die een onderhoudsvriendelijke tuin willen - eenmaal gevestigd heeft deze struik minimaal water nodig.

De intense blauwe kleur is zeldzaam onder tuinplanten en combineert prachtig met witte rozen, lavendel en andere mediterrane planten. Let op: Amerikaanse sering bloeit op het hout van het vorige jaar, dus verkeerd snoeien kan de bloei het volgende seizoen beïnvloeden. Plant bij voorkeur in het voorjaar zodat de wortels zich goed kunnen vestigen voor de winter.
