# Absintalsem

## Artemisia absinthium

De absintalsem heeft met zijn zilvergrijze, fijn verdeelde bladeren een bossige groei. De bloei is geelgroen maar de plant bloeit zelden. De hele plant is aromatisch en kan als keukenkruid gebruikt worden.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

De absintalsem verkiest open, zonnige plaatsen met een lichte, goed doorlatende, droge grond. Oudere planten voorzichtig terugknippen vanaf april. Knip niet te diep terug in het houtige gedeelte.

### Onderhoud

Perfect voor doe-het-zelf tuinprojecten.

Absintalsem (Artemisia absinthium) is een zeer onderhoudsvriendelijke plant die perfect gedijt in onze Vlaamse tuinen. Plant absintalsem in volle zon op goed gedraineerde, liefst kalkhoudende grond. Deze mediterrane plant houdt van droge omstandigheden - water daarom zeer spaarzaam, vooral in de winter. Te veel water kan wortelrot veroorzaken.

Snoei de plant in het vroege voorjaar terug tot ongeveer 10-15 cm boven de grond voor een compacte, bossige groei. Knip de gele bloemen regelmatig weg om de bladgroei te stimuleren - het zilvergrauwe blad is immers het mooiste aan deze plant. Deel oudere planten elke 3-4 jaar in het voorjaar om ze vitaal te houden.

Absintalsem is volledig winterhard en heeft geen bescherming nodig. De plant werdt natuurlijk veel ongedierte af en trekt tegelijk bijen en vlinders aan, waardoor het een uitstekende keuze is voor een natuurlijke, onderhoudsvriendelijke tuin.

### Dit wist je nog niet:

De absintalsem komt van nature voor in onze streek. De plant staat op de Rode lijst als vrij zeldzaam en matig afgenomen. De plant kan gebruikt worden om insectenvraat te bestrijden.

De geur weert insecten waardoor de planten die in de buurt staan ook beschermd worden.

Het aftreksel van de knoppen van de absintalsem is een belangrijk ingrediënt voor het maken van de geestrijke dranken vermout en absint. De plant staat bekend als het bitterste keukenkruid dat we kunnen gebruiken.
