# Abelia

## Abelia sp.

Er bestaan ruim 30 verschillende soorten abelia's waarvan een deel bladhoudend (en minder winterhard) en een deel bladverliezend zijn. Abelia's hebben kleine bloemen, maar bloeien maandenlang en zijn alleen al daarom dankbare tuin- en terrasplanten.

Ze worden niet te hoog of te breed en passen dus prima in een kleinere tuin of plantsoen. De bloei is doorgaans vanaf april tot augustus. De kleine buisvormige bloemen geuren lekker en staan mooi in dichte trossen aan slanke, lichtgebogen takken.

De bladeren zijn smal elliptisch tot eirond en glanzen. De meeste abelia's zijn matig (-7 °C) tot goed (-15 °C) winterhard.

##  Belangrijke zaken om te weten 

### Waar plaatsen

Geef een abelia bij voorkeur een plek tegen een warme muur, uit de noordoostenwind. Vooral bladhoudende soorten hebben zo'n luwe plek nodig om de winter door te kunnen komen. Plant abelia in vruchtbare, goed doorlatende grond.

### Cultivars (Soorten)

Abelia x florinda is niet helemaal winterhard; Abelia x grandiflora, die semi-bladhoudend is, kan beter tegen strenge vorst en bloeit ook erg lang, met kleine lichtroze bloempjes; Abelia schumannii wordt maximum 2 meter hoog, is bladverliezend en bloeit makkelijk 4 maanden lang; sommige cultivars zoals Abelia 'Conti' hebben een gepanacheerd (tweekleurig wit-groen) blad.

### Onderhoud

Abelia's in pot moeten in de winter een bedekking krijgen of naar een beschutte plek verplaatst worden. In pot zijn ze namelijk gevoeliger voor vorst dan in volle grond.

Snoei begin mei, na de laatste nachtvorst. Snij elke keer een derde van de takken helemaal weg: abelia's bloeien het best op jong hout.
